Why Science and Critical Thinking Matter More Than Ever in Ohio

In this keynote, 2026 Ohio Teacher of the Year Chris Monsour reflects on nearly three decades in the classroom to explore why science education and critical thinking skills are essential to Ohio’s future. Through classroom stories, shared experiences, and a powerful call to action, Monsour highlights the role science teachers play in preparing informed citizens, strengthening the workforce, and fostering hope in an increasingly complex world.

Conference Strands

Innovate to Elevate!

From chalkboards to coding, science classrooms have transformed dramatically over the past 50 years—and they continue to do so at lightning speed. This strand focuses on the integration of cutting-edge technologies and STEM/STEAM innovations that elevate learning and expand students' problem-solving capacities.

Sessions in this strand will feature practical strategies and visionary practices in computer science, engineering design, digital tools, and the use of AI in science classrooms. Let’s build a bold, tech-forward future where students are empowered creators, thinkers, and innovators.

Making Science Real!

Over the last 50 years, science instruction has evolved to prioritize relevance, authenticity, and access for all learners. This strand honors that evolution by highlighting approaches that bring science to life through place-based learning, outdoor exploration, ambitious science teaching practices, and community engagement.

Sessions will empower educators to design project-based experiences that are inclusive, meaningful, and rooted in real-world contexts. Let’s celebrate the power of curiosity and deepen our commitment to making science an active and engaging part of every student’s learning journey!

Teaching for Tomorrow!

As the world faces pressing global challenges-climate change, resource depletion, public health, and sustainability—science education plays a critical role in preparing students to be thoughtful, informed problem-solvers. This strand focuses on using science instruction to help students understand complex systems, explore global interdependence, and develop the skills needed to design sustainable solutions.

Sessions will inspire educators to connect classroom learning to the real world and equip students to be agents of change in their communities and beyond.

Sensemaking Through the Standards!

What does it mean to teach science with purpose and coherence? This strand will explore how science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas work together to create a powerful, three-dimensional learning experience.

Sessions will focus on phenomenon-based instruction, Ohio Learning Standards, and NGSS-aligned strategies that promote universal access, differentiation, and deep sensemaking. Let’s celebrate the evolution of science standards by refining the art of teaching science with intention, clarity, and impact.
